Focus on: Descent & Descend

Come on, this one is not that difficult, is it? I’m sure most of you are aware they’re different, but, still, countless inadequacies involving the use of descend & descend have made their way onto the Top 5 pilots’ mistakes in the History of ICAO test.

So, they both refer to the act of descending, moving from a higher to a lower place, coming or going down. The difference is that descent is a noun, whereas (to) descend is a verb:

A very common collocation with descend is “descend immediately” and descend is often seen in as “emergency descent”, as you can observe in one of the examples above.

But here comes a valuable hint for you: be careful not to pronounce descent the same way you pronounce decent, ok? Click on these words to hear the difference and make sure to stress the 2nd syllable in descent 😉
