Prepositions: From & Between

Although we still haven’t talked much about problems involving the usage of in/on/at, I thought we might as well go through two very specific and repeated examples of mistakes made by Brazilian students when using the prepositions from and between.

The mistakes I have in my mind refer especially to those of you who are struggling for a positive grade in the ICAO test and, therefore, I’m just focusing on from as the starting point or specified time/place/value as the first of two limits:

He walked from the pub to the hospital by himself, despite he had been badly hurt.

It would be affordable for most people if we set a limit from $20 to $30 on our Secret Santa.

Flights from Amsterdam to Paris take about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Louise’s new job requires that she travels from Mondays to Wednesdays.

On weekdays we work from 8AM to 6PM.

But when talking about places, you might also want to use the preposition between to account for the distance dividing them; and whereas from requires to as a rule of thumb, between requires and:

There aren’t stopovers between Mexico City and Montreal.

Got it?

He walked from the pub to the hospital by himself, despite he had been badly hurt.

It would be affordable for most people if we set a limit from $20 to $30 on our Secret Santa.

Flights from Amsterdam to Paris take about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Louise’s new job requires that she travels from Mondays to Wednesdays.

On weekdays we work from 8AM to 6PM.

Ao falar de lugares vocês podem, ainda, optar pela preposição between para se referir à distância ou intervalo de tempo entre eles; e enquanto a preposição from requer quase sempre to como preposição complementar, between requer apenas and:

There aren’t stopovers between Mexico City and Montreal.

Sacaram?
